Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly challenged his readers to donate $10 for the purchase of an anti-malaria bed net, and thousands of people have joined the campaign. The people of The United Methodist Church, along with Sports Illustrated, NBA Cares, the United Nations Foundation and several other groups, are raising funds to purchase bed nets to end malaria. You can join the cause and contribute money for bed nets that will keep children and families safe.
Every year, more than a million children die from this disease. Yet, malaria is a preventable disease. By answering Jesus' call to "minister to the least of these who are members of our family," we can beat this disease and save future generations.
North Georgia Netraiser News:
Nothing But Nets Week in Atlanta
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin proclaimed October 20-24 Nothing But Nets week in Atlanta as Nothing But Nets sponsored events around the city. The Atlanta Hawks held a Nothing But Nets Night, donating part of ticket prices to bed nets, the Ron Clark Academy had a bootcamp to teach kids about malaria, Emory University held a special seminar, and Ted Turner joined Mayor Franklin and Atlanta City Council member Kwanza Hall for a news conference and rally in Woodruff Park. The event culminated with a luncheon discussion hosted by the North Georgia Conference and the United Nations Foundation at Peachtree Road UMC in Atlanta. Faith leaders joined together to pray for children and families who suffer from malaria, discuss current issues and threats posed by this disease, and seize the opportunity to get involved in this lifesaving effort. Bishop Tom Bickerton from the Western Pennsylvania Conference, Bishop Mike Watson, Elizabeth Gore, Executive Director of Nothing But Nets, Kwanza Hall and Nikki Teasley and Danielle Donehew of the Atlanta Dream spoke at the event which was attended by approximately 200 North Georgia United Methodists and guests.
Spontanious Annual Conference Offering Goes to Nets
At Annual Conference 2008, the gift of a basketball from North Georgia's General Conference Delegation to Bishop Lindsey Davis led to an outpouring of cash and pledges for Nothing But Nets. The Delegation was given the ball, signed by all the bishops at General Conference, after they made a $1,000 donation to Nothing But Nets at General Conference 2008 in May. A friendly challenge was made by Jamie Jenkins: if Bishop Davis could shoot a basket, Jamie would buy two nets, one for each of them. Soon people across the conference floor were matching Jamie's challenge. More than $10,000 in cash and $114,000 in pledges were made to the Nothing But Nets Campaign in that session. By the end of the week cash and pledges totaled $125,500.
